The main killer in Africa

Masai Mara Lion- by Lauren Gineo

No, its not a lion. In fact, it is a tiny mosquito carrying the malaria parasite. Malaria kills one child every 30 seconds and ninety percent of malarial deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. I just finished a biology class before I flew off to Africa and had to write a research paper on a medically related aspect of genetics and biology. I decided to write my paper on the genetics and ecology of malaria. It’s a bit long and possibly a bit dry for some, but I found the topic to be incredibly interesting. I have attached a copy here if anyone is interested in learning something about this fascinating and sometimes fatal disease.

I will try and post again tonight and give you an update on the trip so far. We are now in an area with better internet access so I hopefully will be able to update on a daily basis.

I can't thank my donors enough for giving me the opportunity to come here and provide medical aid to those in need!
