......the people on the bus go up and down. That song couldn’t be more true of our journey from Nairobi to Uganda. We finished up our last clinic thursday afternoon and departed for what would be an eighteen hour bus ride to Uganda at 6am friday morning. We were told we would be in Jinja, Uganda at our hotel for dinner at 5pm.....well in Kenyan time that means you will get there when you get there and it’s most likely 5+ hours over the initial estimate. Needless to say it was a total experience. We saw many different sights and lots of beautiful landscapes. Our bus was far from road trip ready, complete with non-existent shocks and pencil erasers for brake pads....thats the way I like it though, adds a bit of excitement to the journey and makes for a good story later on! We made it to the border and walked through to get our passports stamped and visas examined. That took quite a while and once complete we still had a 3.5 hour bus ride ahead of us in the cover of darkness. We arrived at the hotel around midnight, unpacked all of our medical supplies, had something to eat and were in bed by 2am. I woke up the next morning around 6am and opted to go for a full day of white water rafting down the Nile river. What an experience!! We hit multiple class five rapids and were able to go down a gnarly waterfall. It was amazing! I had to pinch myself a couple times to remind myself where I was and how this was such a once in a lifetime experience. We stopped half way through the day for an epic lunch on Wakisi island and proceeded down the river to complete a 31km day full of heart racing, breathtaking (literealy) rapids, amazing scenery, and an adrenaline rush to hold me over for a few days! It’s days like this where you get to truly realize the beauty around you and fully appreciate and stand in awe of the power of water. I can’t wait to get back to my aqua playground in Newport and fully embrace how fortunate I really am to be surrounded by wind, waves and water.
I hope you all are well at home and I wish you all a fun filled Fourth of July!

p.s.- i’ll try and post pictures of our boat on some of the rapids once I get access to them.
